Who Are You? the Self as a System of Multilevel Interacting Mechanisms

چکیده
This paper proposes a theory of the self as a multilevel system consisting of social, psychological, neural, and molecular mechanisms. This account provides integrated explanations of many phenomena concerning how people represent, control, and change themselves. The multilevel system theory of the self provides a scientific alternative to transcendental and deflationary views favored by many philosophers. The paper identifies more than sixty aspects of the self that divide naturally into nine groups, and provides multilevel accounts of one representative from each: self-concepts, selfconsciousness, self-deception, self-presentation, self-criticism, self-esteem, selfaffirmation, self-regulation, and self-development. In place of reductionist and holistic approaches to cognitive science, this paper advocates a method of multilevel interacting mechanisms. WHAT IS THE SELF? The concept of the self has been theoretically important in philosophy, psychology, and related social sciences, including sociology, anthropology, and political science. The nature of the self is relevant to explaining many interesting phenomena, including: self-abnegation, self-absorption, self-actualization, self-admiration, selfaffirmation, self-appraisal, self-assessment, self-awareness, self-blame, self-concepts, self-confidence, self-consciousness, self-consistency, self-construction, self-control,

The self as a system of multilevel interacting mechanisms
This paper proposes an account of the self as a multilevel system consisting of social, 5 individual, neural, and molecular mechanisms. It argues that the functioning of the self depends on causal relations between mechanisms operating at different levels. In place of reductionist and holistic approaches to cognitive science, I advocate a method of multilevel interacting mechanisms. This method...
متن کاملP5: Family, Chronic Anxiety and Health
Based on Bowen family systems theory, one of the sources of chronic anxiety is the level of differentiation of self or emotional maturity in the family of origin: the lower level of differentiation results in less adaptiveness to stress, higher chronic anxiety in a relationship system, greater strain on adaptive capabilities and higher health problems and anxiety disorders. So, the goal of this...

متن کاملA Direct Power Feeding System for AC Railway Networks Using Modular Multilevel Converter
Abstract Traditional railway power supply systems impose substantial power quality problems (PQ) on the utility network, such as unbalance, harmonics and a large amount of reactive power. This paper proposes a topology based on three-phase to single-phase modular multilevel converters (MMC) to obviate these problems. The MMC based traction substations (TSS) are connected directly to the utili...
